Cavalry FC's fight for the CPL Shield continues at home this weekend, as they host an ambitious Vancouver FC side in a battle that could well be repeated in the CPL Playoffs.
The Cavs entered Matchweek 19 second in the league table, trailing leaders Forge FC by just one point. Regardless of what the Hamilton club do against FC Supra on Friday night, Cavalry will be laser-focused on maintaining their strong home record to ensure they keep pace at the top.
Tommy Wheeldon Jr.'s men have been immovable at ATCO Field so far this season. Cavalry's home record is 7-2-0 in the CPL this season, and they haven't lost in Calgary since matchweek 16 of last season.
Vancouver FC will pose a new threat, though. Martin Nash's side arrives in Alberta aiming to regroup after a gruelling Matchweek 18. VFC lost on the road in both Ottawa (4-0) and Halifax (1-0) in the span of just four days, although they were far from their best as an illness running through the team kept several players out of the lineup or below their usual abilities.
After a week of recovery, the Eagles are reportedly back to normal, ready to embrace the challenge of playing in one of the CPL's toughest away venues.
Vancouver began the week in fourth place, seven clear of the Halifax Wanderers but three points behind Atlético Ottawa. They'll feel relatively comfortable in their spot above the playoff line, but it's crucial that they continue adding points to lock down their first-ever playoff berth.
If the regular season ended today, VFC would take on Forge FC in the semifinal. They may not have a preference for which of Forge or Cavalry they take on in that round, having beaten both sides this year, but finishing third would give them a slim chance of hosting the CPL Final.
These two sides met just a few weeks ago in Langley, when Vancouver's Lys Mousset delivered the winner against a 10-man Cavalry side. It might not have been the most convincing victory, but it was a statement result for a VFC side that helped vault them into the playoff picture.
That game was Cavalry's most recent defeat; they've won four of their last five since then, which has allowed them to put significant pressure on Forge at the top.
These two sides have had several fascinating battles over the years, dating back to VFC's first-ever home game in 2023. Last year, Vancouver knocked out Cavalry in a memorable Canadian Championship quarterfinal, and the Cavs won an outrageous 5-4 game that was an instant CPL classic.
As these two sides strive to keep climbing the table, are we in for another spectacle in Calgary?

Vancouver midfielder Emrick Fotsing completed a transfer this week to MLS side Vancouver Whitecaps. Fotsing will be loaned back to VFC for the remainder of the CPL season, but he continues to rehab a hip injury and will miss several more weeks.
