Emrick Fotsing is on his way from Vancouver FC to the Vancouver Whitecaps, after completing a club-record transfer that garnered the second-highest fee in Canadian Premier League history.
The 18-year-old midfielder will remain with VFC for the remainder of the CPL season, before heading to BC Place to begin his Major League Soccer journey.
Midway through just his second professional season, Fotsing has 39 appearances for the Eagles, with more to come once he returns from his current injury.
However, Fotsing isn't necessarily the flashiest player, so perhaps it's not immediately clear why the Whitecaps are so keen to bring him into the fold. An all-round, box-to-box midfielder, Fotsing serves a number of roles on the pitch, which is why he has become so useful to Martin Nash and VFC.
Fotsing is composed on the ball for his age, and he can pick out a good pass from anywhere in midfield. He creates chances at a solid rate for somebody who typically sits relatively deep on the pitch (his 16 total is sixth-most for Vancouver players in the last two years). This season, Fotsing's average of 3.0 touches in the box per 90 put him in the upper echelon of midfielders (84th percentile).
He has also scored four career goals for the Eagles, plus two for Canada at the recent Concacaf U-20 Championship. Here's a look at some of those, which showcase how Fotsing uses his physical attributes and footballing instinct to find opportunities in the box — especially in the air.
Where Fotsing's physicality really makes him effective, however, is on the defensive side of the game.
At his best, he is impassable in the centre of the pitch. Fotsing can win duels against almost anybody in the CPL, and he excels at hunting down ball-carriers and recovering possession.
Below are a handful of examples of how Fotsing uses his frame to win and protect the ball, catching up to opponents quickly and angling his body to separate them from the ball. He times his tackles well, and toes the line between acceptable jostling and fouling.
Watch, in particular, the third highlight against Inter Toronto, where he picks out a good attacking pass to Lys Mousset before barging into the box, shoulder-checking Oswaldo León (a good few inches taller than him) to get the ball back after Mousset's heavy touch.
There's no doubt that Fotsing can knock opponents off the ball and make game-saving tackles when he needs to, just by out-muscling an opposing player.
More often than not, though, he doesn't need to.
Fotsing reads the game well, and has good reflexes and instincts for defensive actions. When teams play through the middle of the field, Fotsing is often able to block a pass or intercept the ball cleanly.
He shows a knack for positional intelligence in moments where a midfield partner is engaged in a duel. Usually when that's the case, Fotsing puts himself in the right place to pick off a second ball or collect if it comes loose.
Plus, Fotsing's strong sense of timing helps him safely win tackles in dangerous areas.
The following clips show Fotsing's awareness and ability to react, including at the MLS level against CF Montréal. He can predict where the ball is going to be, or where a shot or pass might come through. In the final clip, he executes a perfect sliding tackle on an attacking player in the penalty area, averting danger in the box.
Fotsing will turn 19 years old in about a month, so he has plenty of development ahead of him. Whitecaps manager Jesper Sørensen will surely already have a plan for incorporating Fotsing into the first team next season, and Fotsing will have several areas of his game to refine.
In just a year and a half in the CPL, though, Fotsing has shown he has all the tools to be an impactful player in a variety of different midfield roles, both with and without the ball.
