CPL Season Structure

The CPL season runs from April to November, with each club playing 28 regular season matches. The top four teams qualify for two-legged home-and-away semifinal ties (1st vs 4th and 2nd vs 3rd), culminating in a single-match CPL Final hosted by the higher-seeded team.
CPL Trophies
Success in the CPL is recognized through two primary trophies: the CPL Shield, awarded to the Regular Season winner, and the North Star Cup, awarded to the Playoff Champion. Both champions earn coveted spots in the Concacaf Champions Cup.

Growing the Domestic Game

Since its inception, the CPL has been committed to producing future generations of Canadian talent. To facilitate opportunity for domestic players, the league maintains specific roster regulations, requiring each team to include at least six Canadian players in each starting 11. Clubs must also reach a threshold of 2,000 minutes played by Canadian players each season in order to be eligible for the CPL Playoffs. Currently, approximately 75 per cent of CPL players are considered domestic.
"Daylight" Offside Trial
New in 2026, the CPL is collaborating with FIFA and IFAB to become the world’s first professional league to trial the alternative ‘daylight’ offside rule. The league has also implemented the Football Video Support (FVS) video review system, allowing coaches to challenge calls.
