Welcome to As It Stands, a weekly column rounding up everything you missed in the Canadian Premier League.

The 2026 CPL season is only two weeks old, and it's already spectacular.

Matchweek 2 gave us a couple stunning goals, a measure of CPL Final revenge, and one unforgettable piece of history.

The story of the moment right now is, without question, FC Supra du Québec. The CPL's newest club, proudly based in and composed of the Quebecois soccer community, aced its first test. They travelled to Vancouver Island for their first ever game, and perhaps would've been happy with just an encouraging performance against Pacific FC.

Instead, Loïc Kwemi started a party with the club's first ever goal, and although Pacific responded well and nearly got out with a 2-2 draw, Supra got their storybook moment.

Twenty-one-year-old Alexandre Marcoux, of Victoriaville, Que., scored in the seventh minute of stoppage time, and FC Supra have their first ever win.

Keep an eye on CPLsoccer.com this week for more coverage ahead of Supra's home opener in Montreal, including a breakdown of how a clever FVS challenge late in the match might've led to their winner at Pacific.

Elsewhere in the CPL, there's plenty to talk about. In Ontario, we got a first look at Inter Toronto, and although the club looks very different in many ways, not everything have changed from the York United era. For a second year in a row, Julian Altobelli scored a brace in his first game of the year, in a 2-2 draw with Halifax.

Cavalry FC are looking like an absolute juggernaut early in the season, too. Although ATCO Field wasn't quite as snowy as TD Place last November, the Cavs got the best of Atlético Ottawa in a CPL Final rematch. Even though Cavalry only had about 35 per cent possession, they were ruthless in attack, scoring with style in a 3-1 wn.

As Tommy Wheeldon Jr. said after this one, "Possession is a myth. It's what you do with it that matters."

Forge FC also stayed perfect, leaving it until late for a 1-0 win at Vancouver FC courtesy of Maxime Filion.

Nobody has played more than two games yet, and no trophies are given out in April, but here's a look at how things stand after two matchweeks:

Pos. Team GP W D L Pts.
1 Cavalry FC 2 2 0 0 6
2 Forge FC 2 2 0 0 6
3 Halifax Wanderers 2 1 1 0 4
4 FC Supra 1 1 0 0 3
5 Inter Toronto 1 0 0 1 1
6 Pacific FC 2 0 0 2 0
7 Vancouver FC 2 0 0 2 0
8 Atlético Ottawa 2 0 0 2 0

Three unblemished records (granted, Supra's is one game — but hey, they've literally never lost!), and three teams still sitting on zero.

One of Forge or Cavalry will drop at least something next weekend, because they play each other on Saturday; that'll be a heck of a showdown between the two sides looking strongest to start the year.

Which one of Pacific, Vancouver and Ottawa is the most worried right now? Certainly, Pacific's James Merriman was the most frustrated in his post-match comments, and perhaps rightly so — the attack looked excellent, which couldn't be said often in 2025, but as Merriman said: "We can't defend like this."

Atlético Ottawa have struggled in their first two games, but the defending champions remain confident. Coach Diego Mejía continued to stress that, with a lot of roster turnover, results will only come after they establish their principles.

"We have a purpose, and then we win," he said. "We win because we have a purpose."

It's not going to be easy for Atleti next week either; they've got the unenviable task of playing spoiler at FC Supra's first ever home game in Montreal.

Given the geographical proximity between the two sides, do we have a potential new rivalry brewing?

Don't miss that one on Sunday.

Awards Watch

Roughly halfway through April, there's a clear front-runner for Player of the Month in Cavalry's Harry Paton. He's scored in each of his first two games for the club, and has been excellent all around in midfield, expertly filling the spaces left behind by Shamit Shome and Diego Gutiérrez.

One narrative to track this year is Julian Altobelli's pursuit of the Golden Boot. He was a candidate last year before falling off toward the end of the season, but after another two-goal start in his first game, it's no secret he's a contender this season.

U-21 Minutes Update

A few clubs area already well on their way, and we saw a handful of U-21 contributions over the weekend.

Tavio Ciccarelli scored a late equalizer for the Wanderers with his first professional goal, which was a cool moment for the 19-year-old.

A total of eight U-21 players started for CPL clubs this weekend.
