First match, first goal, first win.
FC Supra du Québec have entered their inaugural chapter into the history books, as their inaugural Canadian Premier League match provided the first win in club history, a 3-2 triumph thanks to a last-minute winner from Alexandre Marcoux in the seventh minute of stoppage time.
The CPL's newest club took the lead several times in this one; Pacific's veterans brought them back to level footing a couple of times, but the Quebecois club had the last laugh thanks to the second overall CPL-U SPORTS Draft pick Marcoux.
Supra head coach Nick Razzaghi's first starting XI leaned heavily on experienced CPL veterans, like captain David Choinière as well as Aboubacar Sissoko and Sean Rea. They lined up in a 4-2-3-1, with Rea as a number 10 behind the striker Kwemi. Meanwhile, Pacific were in their typical 4-3-3, boosted by the return of captain Josh Heard on the right wing.
Pacific opened the game well, taking control of possession to take away Supra's early energy. The Tridents moved the ball well from the back, trying to find outlets for Heard. They created a few opportunities, but some last-ditch defending and a couple excellent saves by Joakim Milli kept Pacific off the scoreboard.
After the first 25 minutes, Supra began to find their footing. They counter-pressed well, playing forward on goal kicks and attempting to win it back off the Pacific defenders' touch.
Supra's momentum built, and in the 34th minute their historic moment arrived. Clément Bayiha picked up the ball just off the right edge of the box and whipped across low to Loïc Kwemi. The striker took a clever touch to set it behind himself, and stroked a left-footed shot into the net into the bottom corner.
With his team trailing at halftime for a second straight week, Pacific coach James Merriman went to his bench at the interval, bringing Christian Greco-Taylor into the match in place of Kadin Chung.
The Tridents, resurgent in the second half, found their equalizer quickly. After Sean Melvin made a reflex kick save at one end, Pacific flew up the pitch as Marco Bustos cut in from the right flank to square across to Aidan Daniels. Bustos drifted into the box and got the ball back from Daniels, whipping a shot into the top corner to make it 1-1.
Supra responded almost instantly though; five minutes later, after Melvin steered aside an initial shot, Sean Rea arrived at the left goalpost to bury the rebound and restore the visitors' lead.
Pacific wouldn't go quietly, though. With 20 minutes left to play, the Tridents' captain Heard snuck behind Supra's backline to redirect a Greco-Taylor cross into the back of the net, bringing Pacific back to level footing.
After scoring their second, Pacific were the aggressors, looking desperately for a third to take the lead at home. Ronan Kratt almost delivered the winner on a couple of occasions, but Milli denied him with spectacular point-blank stops. In fact, neither side seemed happy with a draw; Riad Bey nearly found one for Supra with a counter-attack that he put just over the bar.
An entertaining final few minutes yielded one final moment of drama.
After Paciifc's Joshua Belluz was sent off with a second yellow card, Supra pressed forward against the 10-man home side.
Finally, with just seconds left to play, Marcoux pounced on a loose ball just in front of the goal, and smashed it into the net emphatically as the visitors made history with a 3-2 win.
