Just weeks after joining the Inter Toronto Pathway, 16-year-old defender Jason Soprinye Brown reached an important milestone in his young career: making his professional debut in the Canadian Premier League.
Born in Baltimore, Maryland, and raised in East Gwillimbury, Ontario, Brown holds Nigerian and American nationality. The 185-centimetre centre-back joined Inter Toronto in September 2026 after impressing the coaching staff during the club's open tryouts, earning a place in the U20 squad and beginning his journey within the Inter Toronto Pathway.
His progression came quickly. After impressing the coaching staff and continuing his development within the Pathway, Brown received an opportunity to train with the CPL First Team.
"I joined Inter Toronto in September of 2026," Brown recalled. "I've just been working with the coaches, developing every aspect of my game, just doing the best I can to keep getting better."
That opportunity led to his professional debut on October 25, when Brown entered the match in the second half of Inter Toronto's 2–1 victory over Atlético Ottawa at York Lions Stadium, helping the club close its 2026 CPL campaign with a win.
A Young Defender with Professional Ambitions
Despite his age, Brown describes himself as an aggressive, intelligent and composed centre-back who combines physical strength with an ability to read the game and make effective decisions under pressure.
"My composure and the ability to do all the simple things efficiently, consistently," Brown explained when discussing his strengths. "Being able to read the game, using my IQ of the game to make smart decisions and help out my teammates in difficult situations."
Within the First Team environment, those characteristics have also earned him a nickname inspired by one of Europe's prominent defenders.
Brown revealed that his teammates began calling him "Willian Pacho," a reference to the Ecuadorian international centre-back who plays for Paris Saint-Germain.
"I think the second day I trained with them, they started calling me Willian Pacho, and the name just stuck," Brown said.
For the young defender, the comparison represents a player whose qualities he hopes to develop in his own game.
"He has a lot in his game that I try to emulate. He's an incredible player for an incredible team, and I aspire to be as good as him, maybe even someday better."
With the U20 Blue squad preparing for the Ontario Premier League Fall U-20 playoffs, Brown remains focused on the team's collective ambitions rather than individual achievements.
"The main focus for me is the team getting us to the playoffs, and then eventually, when we get to the playoffs, to win the playoffs," he explained.
A Message to the Next Generation
Having progressed from an open tryout to a professional debut in a matter of weeks, Brown understands the importance of recognizing opportunities when they arise.
His advice to young players hoping to follow a similar path is straightforward: trust their abilities, remain composed and focus on their game.
"Opportunities like this don't come around too often," Brown said, encouraging aspiring footballers to pursue available opportunities.
"Don't be too nervous. Don't be trying to impress the coaches too much. Just play your game. Play simple football."
For Brown, his first CPL appearance marks an early milestone in a career still taking shape. As he continues his development within the Inter Toronto Pathway, his experience demonstrates how young players can progress from the club's Academy environment to opportunities at the professional level.
