The two-horse race for the 2026 Canadian Premier League Shield is coming down to the wire with just two weeks remaining in the season.
Rivals Cavalry FC and Forge FC sit deadlocked at 54 points with just two matches remaining. The first two tiebreakers, total wins and head-to-head, are also tied.
As it stands, Cavalry sit ahead of Forge FC on the third tiebreaker, which is goal difference. They hold a six-goal advantage, not impossible to make up for Forge, but improbable.
With goal difference separating the two sides, neither can clinch the Shield this weekend, regardless of results in Calgary or in the capital, where Forge FC play Atlético Ottawa.
Instead, it will come down to the final matchday of the season on Oct. 25 to decide whether Cavalry can hold on, or Forge make it three straight regular season titles.
Not only is silverware on the line, and the top seed going into the 2026 CPL Playoffs, but the CPL Shield winner is awarded a spot in the 2027 Concacaf Champions Cup, which is a huge priority for both clubs.
Cavalry or Forge have topped the table at the end of six of the previous seven CPL seasons, and one of these titans will rise to the top again in 2026.
Here's a breakdown of the scenarios and remaining matches for both sides in their pursuit of the Shield:
| Pos. | Team | GP | W | D | L | GF | GA | GD | Pts. |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Cavalry FC | 26 | 16 | 6 | 4 | 53 | 21 | +32 | 54 |
| 2 | Forge FC | 26 | 16 | 6 | 4 | 46 | 20 | +26 | 54 |
Cavalry FC (1st, 54 points)
Remaining Schedule:
- vs. Pacific FC (Saturday, Oct. 17)
- vs. Vancouver FC (Sunday, Oct. 25)
Where they stand:
Despite dropping points in three straight matches during a difficult run on the road, Cavalry FC still control their own destiny. Win their final two matches of the season, at home, and the Shield is essentially theirs.
Forge could technically catch them on the tiebreaker in this scenario, but would have to win their final two matches by a minimum combined nine goals.
History is on Cavalry's side. They have not lost at ATCO Field since July 26, 2025 — a stretch of 20 straight matches unbeaten.
With two victories, they would also set a new CPL record for most home points in a season with 36, one more than they managed in the CPL's inaugural year in 2019.
Cavalry face a pair of B.C. opponents to finish the season. They have lost just once in their past 17 matches against Pacific FC, who they host this weekend, and have an incredibly strong historical record against Vancouver FC, who they face on the final day. But the Eagles could be fighting for their playoff lives in the season finale, making that a particularly difficult test.
For what it's worth, Cavalry have also historically finished regular seasons much stronger than Forge. They've won their final two matches of the CPL regular season in four of the past five years. Forge have never done it before.
Now the pressure is on, and they know that if they slip up again, Forge FC will be ready to pounce and take the prize the Cavs so covet, and top a table they have led for the past eight weeks.
Forge FC (2nd, 54 points)
Remaining Schedule:
- @ Atlético Ottawa (Saturday, Oct. 17)
- @ Pacific FC (Sunday, Oct. 25)
Where they stand:
Forge are playing their best football of the season when it matters most, and at a time when Cavalry have slipped.
They won big this past week, defeating Pacific FC 3-0 and Inter Toronto 5-0. But, realistically, their CPL Shield hopes come down to Cavalry dropping more points and taking advantage.
Any win for them and a draw for Cavalry, or a loss for Cavalry and a draw by Forge, and suddenly they are in complete control.
While Forge play their first two matches of the season away from home, they take on two teams who cannot change their position in the final table. That doesn't mean it will be easy, however. Forge have not won in Ottawa since 2023.
Amid the title race, they also have the biggest match of their season: the 2026 TELUS Canadian Championship final against CF Montréal at Stade Saputo on Wednesday, Oct. 21.
While it is worth understanding the context that they usually have little to play for with the Shield or playoff spot locked up in past years, Forge have historically finished regular seasons slowly. They are 4-2-8 all-time in their final two matches of regular seasons, and have never before won both.
But this year with a third straight CPL Shield on the line, they will be motivated to finish strong and put all the pressure they can on Cavalry.
