The opening match of the 2026 Canadian Premier League season has already produced some history: the league's first ever instance of Football Video Support (FVS) review.
About 20 minutes into the game between Forge FC and Atlético Ottawa, striker Brian Wright was fouled in the penalty area, prompting referee Yusri Rudolf to award a spot kick.
Ottawa head coach Diego Mejía requested a review, sending Rudolf to the screen to check if Noah Abatneh had been fouled by Antoine Batisse's high boot immediately before.
After looking at the footage, however, Rudolf stuck to the original call and awarded the penalty.
Wright would then score from the spot, making it 1-0 for Forge with the first goal of the 2026 season.
The Forge FC vs. Atlético Ottawa match is live on OneSoccer, CBC and TSN.
