The inaugural Langley Derby between Vancouver FC of the Canadian Premier League and Langley United of the British Columbia Premier League on Sunday evening capped off the preliminary round of the 2026 TELUS Canadian Championship and showcased why the Fraser Valley is quickly becoming a hotbed for talent within the Canadian soccer community.
Vancouver FC, runners-up in the 2025 edition of the national domestic knockout competition, earned a 2-0 victory over Langley United, who also call the Langley Events Centre home. It took until the 74th minute for the CPL side to break the deadlock, and the result did not come without several nervy moments created by the reigning BCPL champions.
The Eagles began their 2026 Canadian Championship campaign in similar fashion to how they ended their memorable 2025 run — with another all-B.C. derby. While the challenge posed by the Vancouver Whitecaps, one of the strongest teams in North American soccer in recent years, was obvious, the threat from Langley United was more subtle, but no less real.
With both clubs sharing The Stadium at Langley Events Centre as home, there was a level of familiarity between the two sides that made the matchup uniquely dangerous. Langley United also brought proven experience and quality to its eleven, including Ivan Mejia — who scored for TSS Rovers in their upset victory over Valour FC in the 2023 Canadian Championship — former Vancouver player Joey Buchanan, and highly regarded young talent Lucas Friend, son of Canadian Men’s National Team alumnus and Vancouver co-owner and president Rob Friend.
The first half of the newfound derby was relatively even despite Vancouver controlling 74.2 per cent of possession. The Eagles held slight edges in shots, shots on target and expected goals — leading Langley United 0.48 to 0.12 in xG — but neither side created many dangerous opportunities before halftime.
Langley United came out on the front foot in the second half, recording two shots on target within the opening eight minutes and twice forcing Vancouver captain Callum Irving into important saves. Friend gave the CPL side its first real scare in the 60th minute with a mid-range effort from inside the box that Irving did well to push away.
Four minutes later, Nikolas Papakyriakopoulos volleyed a cross toward Buchanan near the penalty spot, but Irving reacted quickly to stop the close-range header on his goal line.
Those were chances Langley United will likely rue as Vancouver began to build momentum and the pro-am side started to run out of gas in the final stages of the match.
The home side finally found the breakthrough in the 74th minute when a Nicolas Mezquida free kick struck the crossbar and bounced back to Marcello Polisi. The midfielder fired a long-range effort into a crowded penalty area, where a deflection off Tom Field wrong-footed Langley United goalkeeper Treyson Smiley and squeezed inside the near post to give the CPL side the lead.
Mezquida doubled Vancouver’s advantage in the 87th minute, finishing off a well-worked move sparked by a box-to-box run down the left flank from Kian Proctor, who delivered a dangerous ball across goal for the veteran midfielder to tap home from close range.
Vancouver FC will now advance to the quarter-final round in July, where they will face Major League Soccer side CF Montréal. Montréal booked their place in the next round after defeating reigning Alberta Premier League champions Calgary Blizzard earlier in the round.

Nicolás Mezquida, Vancouver FC
Mezquida’s quality proved decisive in the Langley Derby. His pinpoint free kick led to the opening goal, a deflection off Tom Field, and he later added a second to seal the result. The veteran midfielder also showed the occasion the respect it deserved, constantly demanding more from his teammates and driving standards even as Vancouver struggled to find its rhythm against a motivated Langley United side.
