FC Supra is firmly in the playoff race and desperately needs three points against a Halifax Wanderers side with nothing left to play for, while also hoping Vancouver FC slips up in Calgary.

FC Supra sits two points behind fourth-place Vancouver FC, and this final game of the season represents its last opportunity to overtake its rival at the death.

To keep its season alive a little longer, FC Supra must win and hope Vancouver FC stumbles. The good news for Supra is that Vancouver will face a tough challenge away to Cavalry FC, as the Alberta side is level on points with Forge FC at the top of the standings. In other words, Cavalry needs a win to ensure it finishes at the top and claims the title. Although FC Supra no longer controls its own destiny, it still has an excellent opportunity to make the playoffs.

For the Halifax Wanderers, meanwhile, only honour and pride remain to play for, as they finish the season outside the playoff places. In recent weeks, when facing teams already eliminated from playoff contention, FC Supra has made no mistake, winning relatively comfortably while boosting both its attacking and defensive statistics. Supra has kept two clean sheets against Pacific FC and Inter Toronto, while piling up the goals in 5-0 and 3-0 victories.

Does that mean this game will be easy? Not necessarily.

The Wanderers currently sit sixth in the standings, but second-last Inter Toronto are just one point behind. Even if the standings may seem largely symbolic at this stage, avoiding a second-last-place finish is always a welcome outcome for a team.

Although there is a seven-point gap between the two sides, much of the difference comes down to the Wanderers' higher number of draws. While Supra has drawn just five games, Halifax has recorded seven. The Wanderers have lost only one more game than Supra.

The two teams are also relatively close in terms of goals scored and conceded. Halifax has scored 41 goals and conceded 46, while Supra has scored 43 and conceded 47.

Different momentum and a ground that can be conquered

The biggest difference between the two teams lies in their recent form. Since head coach Kyt Selaidopoulos took charge, FC Supra has remained unbeaten, recording three wins and one draw for 10 points out of a possible 12. By contrast, the Wanderers have suffered two defeats and drawn twice in their last four matches, earning just two points from a possible 12.

Although the Wanderers will have home-field advantage, their supporters have not necessarily had much to celebrate this season. Wanderers Grounds has not exactly been a fortress, with Halifax recording four wins, four draws and five defeats at home.

FC Supra has already beaten the Wanderers on their own turf this summer. The Quebec side won that first meeting in Nova Scotia by a 3-2 scoreline. However, the Wanderers won the most recent encounter, played in Quebec, 2-1. Supra had previously won the first-ever meeting between the two sides in late April, also by a 2-1 scoreline.

If it qualifies, FC Supra would become the first expansion team in league history to reach the playoffs. That may seem like a secondary motivation for Supra, but no achievement should be underestimated. The stakes are high for Supra heading into this final match.

KEY QUOTES

"[Qualifying for the playoffs] would be a huge bonus for the club, for the province and for the history of the CPL, because we would become the first expansion team to reach the playoffs. It would be a bonus for everyone, but as I said, we’re taking things step by step and putting things in place. Everyone has worked very hard over the past three weeks, whether it’s the coaching staff, the players or the club. Once again, Sunday is just another game, and if we manage to get that bonus, everyone will be happy." - FC Supra head coach Kyt Selaidopoulos
