Thanksgiving Monday is Kyle Bekker Day in Hamilton this year.
This weekend, Forge FC will mark the holiday with their final home match of the regular season, as they take on Inter Toronto in a game with enormous significance both on and off the field.
Both sides will, of course, be desperate for a win — either to keep pace in the CPL Shield race or stay alive in the playoff hunt — but it'll be an extra-special afternoon as Forge pay tribute to their inaugural captain Bekker in honour of his retirement.
Forge come into Monday's game in good spirits after a resounding 3-0 win over Pacific FC on Wednesday night. With three games left to play, they're still in contention for the regular season title, two points behind Cavalry FC (who play in Halifax later on Monday afternoon). The Hammers will therefore be eager to collect all three points, hoping that Cavalry stumble against the Wanderers to allow them to take over first place.
Inter Toronto will not be eager to give those points to their rivals, however. They come into this game in Hamilton with a clear sense of the task at hand: Win, or it's over.
Anything other than victory in each of their final three games would officially eliminate Toronto from playoff contention. In fact, if Vancouver FC beat FC Supra du Québec on Saturday, it's over for Toronto anyway, but Mauro Eustáquio and co. are trying not to think about that.
"We know that we're in this position due to ourselves," the Inter Toronto head coach said on Friday. "The only ones to continue to fight and continue with these slim windows open is ourselves. It's a must-win, it's a derby. It's something we don't need extra motivation for, to get up and play these games. Our playoff opportunities are still there, slimmer than ever, but they're still there. But there's so much about being a professional athlete, there's so much to being involved in professional sports, that this competitive edge has to be with us."
Inter Toronto missed an enormous opportunity on Wednesday, when they took an early lead against FC Supra in their School Day Match, but conceded twice before halftime to end up losing 2-1. That result halted the club's momentum after an impressive win last weekend over Cavalry FC. Now, they remain in seventh place, six points behind fourth-place Vancouver entering the weekend.
Monday's game will be the final regular season meeting of the 905 Derby rivals in 2026. Forge won the first two matchups at York Lions Stadium earlier this year, but the game they played in Hamilton in September was a closer contest. Toronto took the lead that day thanks to 18-year-old Ty Clarke on his debut, but Forge did find a late equalizer as the clubs split the points.
Expect a boisterous affair at Hamilton Stadium on Monday, as two familiar foes go head-to-head with a lot on the line.
'He opened up doors': Inter Toronto show respect for Bekker, Smyrniotis calls for strong fan turnout
As mentioned, it'll be an emotional day in Hamilton as Forge honour Bekker with a pregame ceremony.
So, Forge head coach Bobby Smyrniotis said, there's no better place to be on a sunny Thanksgiving Monday than in the stands at Hamilton Stadium.
"The biggest message I want to give the fans is to come and celebrate Kyle Bekker," Smyrniotis said on Friday. "That's the big thing, because sometimes we have to look beyond football and the game itself and celebrate a gentleman, a player that's been tremendous for this club, for this league, and in Canadian soccer."
Although Inter Toronto remain primarily focused on the sporting task at hand, knowing there's plenty of pressure on them in the game itself, the club's staff and players do acknowledge the importance of celebrating a pioneer of the CPL like Bekker.
Plus, they'll undoubtedly be thrilled they won't have to play against him anymore.
"What he's done for Canadian soccer and the CPL from the start, I can't say anything but thank him," said Toronto defender Max Ferrari, who has gone toe-to-toe with Bekker 21 times in the last seven years.
"All I've got to say is that guy is a competitor. He's a fighter. I've never played against a guy that talks so much and plays so well at the same time, and I just know he's going to do big things after the game as well. All I have to say is as a direct opponent to him, thanks for what he's done for this league, because he's grown [it], and I'm sure there's a lot of kids watching that go to Hamilton games that look up to Kyle Bekker."
Inter Toronto head coach Eustáquio echoed Ferrari's thoughts on Bekker as a competitor, recalling his own experiences playing against him. In addition to their CPL meetings, Eustáquio and Bekker played against each other in both the NASL and USL, when Eustáquio was at FC Edmonton and Penn FC, and Bekker was with the San Francisco Deltas and North Carolina FC.
Eustáquio added that he has a lot of respect for Bekker's work to help grow the Canadian Premier League.
"Kyle's one of those Canadian players that very early turned into a professional, and has had a very long, successful career," Eustáquio said. "He has opened up doors for a lot of kids, a lot of players, a lot of coaches, a lot of Canadians. My respect for Kyle is a lot. I think he still had a couple more years in him, but this is football. He's one that we've got to hang onto, keep him in this sport in this country and continue to have him around, because when it comes to football, he's one of the brilliant minds of this country."

KEY QUOTES
"The most important thing we always know is to be successful in a season, we make it very difficult for anyone to leave here with anything, and our guys generally do a good job about it. We've got some new players who have integrated well into the lineup, performances keep on getting better game after game." - Forge FC head coach Bobby Smyrniotis
"The victory [on Wednesday] was needed because the tie against Halifax hit us hard because we were winning 3-1 in the 92nd minute and tied. Those points were really important, so that affects us, and we just came back to training and worked hard. We knew on Wednesday we had to win, and we got the three points and the job done, and now we have to continue forward." - Forge FC forward Aghilas Sadek
"When we're at our best, even though at times we haven't been consistent with that, we've shown that we can be one of the better teams in this league. But it's trying to find that consistency. That belief has to come with us to work every day, or else we're not here, and we're not doing anything if we're just checking boxes and coming to work just for a paycheque. ... We have to continue to have that belief, we have to go into these games not really looking at the table but looking at who we are, what we want to do, and what we want to accomplish in the next couple games." - Inter Toronto head coach Mauro Eustáquio
"When you go to a place like this — I don't like talking about it but we haven't beaten Forge in a really long time, and that's going to be on our minds as well. We really need to get one on these guys. We're going to be hungry right from the first; last game, we can all agree that first 45 minutes just wasn't good enough, wasn't up to standards for a must-win game." - Inter Toronto defender Max Ferrari
