The Canadian men's U-20 team is one step away from qualifying for the 2027 FIFA U-20 World Cup.
Les Rouges face Jamaica on Wednesday evening in the quarterfinals of the Concacaf U-20 Championship, the winner of which will not only move on but qualify directly to next year's World Cup in Azerbaijan and Uzbekistan.
Jesse Marsch and the young Canadians (including four Canadian Premier League players) advanced to the quarterfinals by winning Group C with a 1-2-0 record, and their reward is a rematch with Jamaica. These sides met on the final matchday of the group stage, where Canada led before a 102nd-minute penalty snatched a point for Jamaica.
This rematch will take place in Estadio Cuauhtemoc in Puebla, Mexico on Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. ET/3:30 p.m. PT (live on OneSoccer).
Canada hasn't qualified for the men's U-20 World Cup since they hosted the tournament in 2007. To return to that stage would mark a positive step forward as the next chapter of Canadian soccer begins in the wake of the 2026 World Cup.
Fortunately, this Canadian group is one of the strongest in recent memory, and they're being led by the senior national team head coach Marsch, which underlines how important it is to get the next generation off on the right foot.
The CPL contingent on this Canadian team has played a key role in the tournament so far.
Vancouver FC's Emrick Fotsing has been a star, captaining the team in two group stage matches and recording two goals and an assist. His VFC teammate Marsel Bibishkov has done well in the attack, having stepped in as a mid-tournament alternate for injured Inter Toronto forward Shola Jimoh.
Meanwhile, Atlético Ottawa star Sergei Kozlovskiy has picked up where he left off at the 2025 FIFA U-17 World Cup. The talented centre-back played 208 minutes in the group stage and picked up an assist against Panama with a set-piece delivery. He'll undoubtedly be one of Canada's most important defenders in the quarterfinal.
Forge's Zayne Bruno has started every match for Canada at right-back, a position he has learned to play in the CPL. He arrived in camp already familiar with Marsch, after joining the senior national team as a training player for their pre-World Cup preparations in June.
Altogether, this Canadian squad has proved it has talent and the ability to score goals, but this quarterfinal will be a crucial test. They'll feel they should have held on to beat Jamaica last time, and will need to be on their toes in this rematch.
Should Canada win on Wednesday and advance to the semifinals, they could dream even bigger than the U-20 World Cup. One team from this tournament (the highest-finishing side other than the United States) will also qualify for the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles; Canada hasn't played at an Olympic men's tournament since 1984.
A tremendous opportunity stands in front of this young Canadian team; pushing themselves forward, and playing in big tournaments at the youth level, would lay an excellent foundation for the next generation of the national team.
It'll be a tricky test, though.
