Never before in the Canadian Premier League's eight seasons has there been a regular-season match with this much importance.
The result of Cavalry FC and Vancouver FC will not only determine the 2026 CPL Shield winner, but also who makes the playoffs this season.
For Cavalry, a victory would all but assure them they lift the CPL Shield as regular season winners in front of their home fans, the culmination of an incredible campaign. Technically, rivals Forge could pass them with a win as well, but would need to win by at least eight goals in Victoria.
Should Cavalry draw, Forge could snatch the CPL Shield with a victory in Vitoria. Should they lose, Forge would only need a draw.
Vancouver FC, meanwhile, need a win to clinch a playoff spot for the first time in club history. Should the Eagles lose or draw, it opens the door for FC Supra du Québec to leap over them into the fourth and final playoff spot with a victory in Halifax.
So not only will supporters in Calgary and Vancouver be locked into this match, but so will those in Hamilton and Montréal.
A draw doesn't really do much for either club, so expect fireworks until the final whistle as these two teams fight to see the goal of their entire season realized.
Cavalry are playing for the right to have home-field advantage throughout the playoffs as well, which paid huge dividends in 2024 when they lifted the North Star Cup at ATCO Field.
That was the last time Cavalry had an opportunity quite like this, where a victory at ATCO would mean lifting a trophy in front of their home fans.
They have been exceptional at home this season, and are now 21 matches unbeaten at ATCO Field dating back to July 26, 2025. They would set a CPL single-season record for home points with a victory, surpassing the 35 they collected back in 2019.
Vancouver FC, meanwhile, have not won a road match since Aug. 7 in Hamilton, a run of six straight games. They are, however, unbeaten in their past five, and coming off a hard-fought 2-1 win over the Halifax Wanderers.
Cavalry FC have spent the past nine matchweeks at the top of the table. Vancouver FC have been in a playoff spot for the past 14 weeks. So for either of them to fail to see that out will be a considerable disappointment.
Both control their fate, but only one can get the result they need on Sunday. Their seasons, as well as Forge FC's and FC Supra's, come down to this.
