Pacific FC have put an end to a five-game losing streak, as they played Inter Toronto to an eventful 1-1 draw at Starlight Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
The game had no shortage of chances at both ends and plenty of end-to-end action — not to mention a few controversial decisions — but neither team was able to snatch the win.
The Tridents thus picked up their first point of the Terry Dunfield era, while Toronto halted their own losing skid after two matches.
Even before kickoff there was a wrinkle in the starting lineups for this game: Inter Toronto handed a professional debut to 17-year-old full-back Nicolas Andrada, who signed a Development Contract with the club just hours before the match.
The game was chaotic from the get-go, even though it remained scoreless until shortly before halftime. Both sides looked determined to get forward quickly and score from direct attacks, and they each repeatedly cut through the other's defensive lines.
However, a combination of timely goalkeeping and poor finishing at either end meant the two teams had nothing to show for their chances but mounting frustration.
Until, that is, Pacific finally found a breakthrough. Less than two minutes before halftime, they broke with pace up the right flank. Mattias Vales and Ronan Kratt connected to allow Kratt to drive at the end line, where he cut it back to Yann Toualy for a one-touch tap into the goal from in close.
Pacific thus found themselves leading for a third straight match, now aiming to finally convert a lead into their first win of the year.
At the interval, both sides had double-digit shots on the board, and Toronto had been kept out by five good saves from their former goalkeeper, Eleias Himaras.
Inter Toronto were spared a disastrous start to the second half, when Pacific made an FVS challenge for a potential penalty 10 minutes after the break. Steffen Yeates's hand did make contact with the ball in the penalty area, but the referee decided it was incidental, keeping the score at 1-0 for the moment.
The visitors seized that lifeline, and not long after a mistake by Pacific allowed Toronto to level the score.
Moments after the hour mark, Himaras played a pass through the middle of the pitch that failed to find its target. Toronto defender Luke Singh spotted the errant ball and pounced on it, floating a well-placed shot from well outside the box over Himaras, who was well off his line, and into the net.
Pacific poured on the pressure in the final 20 minutes, and came inches from reclaiming the lead; Toualy and Max Piepgrass both rattled the woodwork with thunderous shots that would've beaten the keeper.
Toronto thought they had an opportunity to snatch victory in the final minutes, when they had their own claim for a penalty. However, much like the earlier FVS decision that went their way, the referee stuck with his on-field decision and didn't award the spot kick.
This match was not necessarily a banner example of finishing, with the shot count ending 21 to 19 for Pacific, but it was an entertaining fixture. A point apiece doesn't much help either side in the standings, but it does put an end to both teams' losing streaks.
Now, Pacific and Toronto will each head into their next fixture feeling they've stopped the bleeding, and can build upward from here.
