At the stadium where he built much of his legacy as a Canadian Premier League legend over eight seasons, Forge FC captain Kyle Bekker formally announced his retirement on Thursday.
During a special event at Hamilton Stadium, Bekker was given multiple boisterous standing ovations as he took to the podium to emotionally reflect on an incredible eight years in Hamilton and an outstanding career.
"I've experienced the great heights and suffered crushing defeats, but at the end of the day, I'm just grateful to have made a life doing something I love every day," said Bekker.
Before Bekker took the stage, he was honoured by Hamilton Sports Group Managing Partner and CEO Scott Mitchell, Forge FC head coach Bobby Smyrniotis, and former teammate and Canadian soccer legend David Edgar.
"He is the greatest player to ever play in this league," said Smyrniotis. "He's a legend in what he's been able to do."
Smyrniotis spoke at length about the incredible journey that he and Bekker have shared, from when he first coached him at 14 with Sigma FC, to the four Canadian Premier League titles they won together over the past eight seasons and representing the club on some of the biggest stages in North America.
"He's been the engine of this club since day one, and he continued to be in his last moments on the field," said Forge FC head coach Bobby Smyrniotis.
He mentioned Bekker's last professional match, the TELUS Canadian Championship semifinal against Supra on Sept. 15 where he suffered a season-ending knee injury. Ten minutes later, Bekker was back on the bench, knee wrapped in ice, directing his teammates as they fought to a 1-0 victory, and booked a spot in the CanChamp final.
It was the latest moment in a trying year for the Forge captain. He was diagnosed with testicular cancer during preseason and underwent successful surgery. He faced it all with the bravery and leadership he displayed during his eight seasons on the pitch.
"I always joked about playing until the Wheels fell off," said Bekker. "After a cancer diagnosis and a ruptured ACL, I don't have any wheels left on this 1990 Honda Civic."
While he has stepped on the pitch as a player for the final time, all indications are that Bekker will remain heavily involved in the game he loves. His first pursuit: continuing to captain Forge in their pursuit of more silverware, including a shot at a first Voyageurs Cup on Oct. 21 in Montréal.
"Leadership doesn't retire," said Edgar. "The standards that [he] set, the people that [he] influenced, the friendships [he] built along the way, the examples to the next generation, they stay."
Forge will honour Kyle Bekker on Monday, Oct. 12 in their final home match of the 2026 CPL regular season. Tickets are available here.
