The Canadian men's U-20 team booked their place in the 2027 FIFA U-20 World Cup on Wednesday, as they defeated Jamaica 3-1 after extra time in their Concacaf U-20 Championship quarterfinal in Puebla, Mexico.
The Canada side, which featured four Canadian Premier League players in the matchday squad, is now headed to the Concacaf semifinals as they also look to qualify for the 2028 Olympic Games.
It was a thrilling knockout win for the Canadians, who took the lead early in the second half thanks to a brilliant solo effort by Whitecaps youngster Liam Mackenzie. It wouldn't be that easy, though; Jamaica tied it from a penalty kick late to send it to extra time.
However, Canada were decidedly the better team in the additional frame; they won a penalty of their own, which Mackenzie slotted confidently to restore the lead. After a period of outstanding defending, Max Vogele sealed it for Les Rouges with a blistering strike from well outside the box.
Senior national team coach Jesse Marsch, who has taken charge of the U-20s for this tournament, handed starts in this match to Forge FC's Zayne Bruno and Atlético Ottawa's Sergei Kozlovskiy.
Vancouver FC forward Marsel Bibishkov entered the fray later on, and also contributed well to Canada's tough pressing style.
Unfortunately, Bibishkov's VFC teammate Emrick Fotsing was an unused sub on the evening, likely forced to the sidelines with an injury.
Still, it was an excellent show of resilience from the young Canadian team, who had conceded a similar late equalizer to Jamaica in their final group stage match. This time, they managed to use the extra time period to get back in front with gusto, seeing off their opponent once and for all.
Canada will now advance to the tournament semifinals on Friday night against Mexico at the fabled Estadio Azteca.
By getting to this stage, Les Rouges have qualified for the next U-20 World Cup, which will take place in 2027 in Azerbaijan and Uzbekistan. Canada hasn't appeared at the tournament since 2007, when they hosted it.
Now, Marsch and the Canadian team will continue to aim for history; if they win their semifinal, they'll have an excellent chance of qualifying for the Olympics for the first time since 1984.
