The Eagles were tested but they won a game they needed to against the Halifax Wanderers.

Vancouver FC will go into the final week of the 2026 Canadian Premier League regular season in a playoff spot, after they beat the Halifax Wanderers 2-1 on Friday night at the Langley Events Centre.

It was an essential result for the Eagles, who earlier that night watched FC Supra du Québec jump ahead of them into fourth place. Vancouver did what they needed to in the later game, as Matteo Campagna's second-half winner put them back in front of Supra.

Although VFC's margin for error is small, they'll go to Calgary next Sunday with an opportunity to clinch the first postseason berth in club history.

Vancouver's urgency was on display from the get-go on Friday night, as Thierno Bah challenged Halifax keeper Marco Carducci in just the third minute. Carducci parried that attempt, but it set the tone for a half where the Eagles would be undeniable protagonists.

They generated five shots within the first 16 minutes of the game, working the ball forward and trying to find ways to pass between the Wanderers' well-constructed defensive lines.

Midway through the opening half, VFC found a way through. Morey Doner fed a low ball into the box that defender Thomas Meilleur-Giguère intercepted — but he knocked it straight to Bah, standing a few feet away. Bah settled the ball and fired home (with a deflection off Kareem Sow), giving Vancouver the lead they'd been seeking.

The Wanderers, although they'd been officially eliminated from playoff contention earlier that night, refused to go down without a fight, and they levelled the score just before halftime.

Miguel Arilla drove through the box toward the end line before cutting it back for Lucas Olguin, whose low shot cut through several Vancouver defenders en route to the bottom corner of the goal.

So, at halftime, Vancouver found themselves with 45 minutes left to keep control of their own fate in the playoff race. To make matters worse, the Eagles suffered another blow during the break: Bah, who picked up a lower-body injury in the first half, could not continue.

Martin Nash thus had to use an early sub, taking his goalscorer off the pitch and deploying Aboubacar Traore.

The home side's desperation grew as the second half wore on. For wave after wave of possession, they tried to get close to the goal but Halifax turned them away.

At last, however, their hero arrived — and it was the same hero as last week.

With 15 minutes to play, the Eagles had a number of players crowding the box, as Kian Proctor chased down a rolling ball to take a quick throw-in. He found Traore, and the substitute attacker floated a ball toward the masses in the penalty area.

Matteo Campagna, just as he'd done in Laval a week prior, jumped with his back to goal and got his head on the ball, redirecting it perfectly into the net at the back post and sending the Langley Events Centre into a frenzy.

Emboldened by the goal, Vancouver remained aggressive and looked for another in the final 10 minutes, which kept the Wanderers far away from their end of the pitch.

Although the Eagles didn't manage to score another, the 2-1 scoreline was all they needed.

With three crucial points — perhaps the most important three points in club history — Vancouver will have a modicum of breathing room in next Sunday's regular season finale.

They'll go into the final week two points ahead of FC Supra. Of course, they have the tremendously difficult task of taking on first-place Cavalry FC at ATCO Field, where they've never won a CPL match before. Even if they can't win that, however, Supra would have to win in Halifax to pass Vancouver — which, as the Eagles themselves know all too well, is not so easy.

Next weekend is shaping up to be one of the most dramatic the CPL has ever seen.

CPLSoccer.com Player of the Match

Matteo Campagna, Vancouver FC

The hero again for Vancouver FC. The centre-back scored what could go down as one of the most important in this club's history, but he was good all night for the Eagles as the primary outlet from the defensive line. He led the team in passes completed (47) and won five out of six duels.

What's Next?

These two sides, like every other in the Canadian Premier League, will play their final regular season match next Sunday, Oct. 26 at 4 p.m. ET/1 p.m. PT.

Vancouver will head on the road to Calgary for a massive showdown with Cavalry FC, while the Wanderers wrap things up at home against FC Supra du Québec.
