Atlético Ottawa has today confirmed that defender Roni Mbomio has been named to the Equatorial Guinea National Team for the upcoming FIFA international window.
Mbomio, 21, will join Equatorial Guinea for their Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifying matches against DR Congo (September 24), who were eliminated by England in the 2026 FIFA World Cup™️ Round of 32, and Sierra Leone (September 28). The Atlético de Madrid academy graduate has two international caps, making his debut in March as a late substitute in Equatorial Guinea’s victory over Kyrgyzstan and subsequently starting the narrow defeat to Comoros in June.

Mbomio was a standout player in the 2025 CPL season, his first as a professional, while on loan from Atlético de Madrid and lifting the North Star Cup at TD Place in November 2025. Most recently, Mbomio assisted the late winning goal against Inter Toronto FC in Ottawa.
The 2027 AFCON qualifiers feature 48 teams that are divided into 12 groups of four, with each team playing six matches in a home-and-away format. The top two teams in most groups will qualify for the tournament in the summer of 2027.
Equatorial Guinea has been drawn in Group E for the AFCON qualification round and shares this group with DR Congo, Sierra Leone, and Zimbabwe. The 2027 Africa Cup of Nations will be co-hosted by Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda in June and July.
Mbomio is available for selection against FC Supra du Québec on Sunday, September 20, before departing on international duty and returning on October 6.
