The Atleti Equal Access Camps presented by Intega IT has returned to the Carlington neighbourhood this summer, bringing together young players from an underserved community for one of the most unique soccer experiences in the country.
Led by Atlético Ottawa staff and visiting coaches from Atlético de Madrid, this camp is designed to help remove barriers to the sport. Children from all backgrounds were given the opportunity to experience high level coaching, opening the door to learn, develop, and enjoy the worlds game.
This year’s sessions were led by Atletico Ottawa Juniors coaches and offered the kids the chance to train with experienced coaches from Spain, providing a unique perspective on the game while creating amazing memories both on and off the pitch.
Atlético Ottawa staff have said “the biggest thing for us has always been that until the full community has access to the game then Canada is not going to be able to take the huge step forward, we would like them to take both in the domestic club level but also in the international stage”.
That commitment to growing the game has been reflected in the sessions as the kids have embraced the opportunity to learn from experienced coaches, ask questions, and improve their skills. The camp has allowed young Canadian players the chance to learn the specific Spanish playing style, an identity that lead to the Spanish national team achieving World Champion status at this recent World Cup.
One of the Atlético de Madrid coaches said, “they are so grateful with everything, saying thank you for everything because they know we are from another country, we are from Spain so we have another idea about football, and they ask and try every day.”
The Atleti Equal Access Camps presented by Intega IT continue to demonstrate the positive impact soccer can have when access is no longer a barrier. Together with Intega IT, Atlético de Madrid, and local community partners, Atlético Ottawa is helping create meaningful opportunities for the Canadian youth while also inspiring them to be the newest generation of Canadian soccer players.
As the program continues to grow Atlético Ottawa will remain committed to the community and will use the game to bring the Canadian youth together with the goal of strengthening communities and ensuring every child has the opportunity to step onto the pitch and experience the worlds game.
