The Canadian Premier League's secondary transfer window opened on Thursday, and there has already been a flurry of action as teams look to strengthen their squads for the upcoming run-in and CPL Shield race.
On Wednesday, Pacific FC announced the return of their all-time leading scorer, Alejandro Díaz, while Vancouver FC added exciting young Canadian striker Hugo Mbongue.
More moves are expected over the coming weeks, which could prove crucial to how the second half of the season plays out.
Here is one profile of a player that each team could use during this window as they look to improve over the second half of the campaign:
Atlético Ottawa: A creative attacker
For a team that has scored a league-leading 33 goals this season, adding more to their attack might seem a little counterintuitive. But there is no question that attacking football is both this team's strength and identity.
In this regard, having one more player that can unlock an opposing defence and provide service to Golden Boot leader Sam Salter certainly can't hurt.
Particularly, the one match that David Rodríguez missed this season against the Halifax Wanderers, it was clear that this club could use another creative attacking player to connect the midfield with the final third.
Also, as they play teams for a third and fourth time, if not more, considering Canadian Championship action, having another weapon at Diego Mejía's could prove vital as they look too maintain their spot at the top of the table.
Cavalry FC: A depth striker
The defending champs already addressed a need with the recent signing of Goteh Ntignee, bringing another important profile to their attacking unit.
Cavalry remain one of the deepest teams in the league, and with a number of players set to return from injury soon, that will perhaps solve a few positions -- especially in midfield. They also have several versatile players who can deploy in multiple positions.
But one area where this team could perhaps use another option is a more traditional number nine to lead the line. Evidently, Tobias Warschewski remains one of the best attackers in the Canadian Premier League, but tends to drift all over the pitch during matches and could at times use someone to play off of. Caniggia Elva, meanwhile, does his best work as an attacking midfielder or second striker as well.
Having an attacking focal point to complement him and having another threat in the box, particularly in matches where they need to break down an opponent set in their shape, could be very beneficial for Cavalry.
Forge FC: Another striker option
Another club with depth to spare is Forge FC, and it has been a crucial in their league-record 15-match unbeaten run to open this year's campaign.
One area where they could perhaps use another option is at striker. After a bit of a slow start, Brian Wright has been excellent up top of late, with seven goals, tied for third most in the league this season. Max Filion has done well off the bench.
But it is perhaps the one position where the club does not have a whole lot of cover, and when Wright isn't available, they tend to have to put a player less comfortable in that position.
Even going back to last year, when Kwasi Poku departed the club midway through the season, their lack of a focal point in attack cost them -- especially in the CPL Final against Cavalry. Making sure they have a plan B, or C, this season will be important for the second half.
Halifax Wanderers: Wide attacker
While Halifax are on a bit of a slide lately, they have proven to be a team with a lot of options this season, particularly in central midfield.
One area where they could perhaps use another dynamic option, however, is out wide. Jason Bahamboula and Yohan Baï have been decent down the right wing, and Wesley Timoteo quality on the left, but it still feels like this team are missing the dynamic width that a player like Massimo Ferrin afforded them last season.
Having another target in behind for their quality cast of midfielders, as well as a player who can break the lines himself, could be big in giving this group another attacking option during the back half of the season.
Pacific FC: Central defensive depth
The Tridents have already crossed the top item off their shopping list with the addition of Alejandro Díaz to be the focal point of their attack.
In that very same announcement, however, the club revealed that central defender Pedro Machado is departing. That leaves a pretty big hole next to Aly Ndom at central defender, one that the club will need to address during this window.
Given Ndom's dynamic ability to pass out of the back and get forward, finding him a partner with strong defensive awareness who can complement his abilities is vital.
Valour FC: A veteran central defender
For as tempting as it is to add in the attacking phase of the field, the bigger issue this season for Valour has been at the back, where they have conceded a league-leading 34 goals in 14 matches.
When Valour have traditionally been at their best, it is when they are incredibly difficult to break down. With that in mind, they could use a no-nonsense veteran central defender to organize their backline and make them a lot more stingy.
Andrew Jean-Baptiste's influence on past Valour teams, for example, is the perfect profile for them to chase as a player who can just solidify things at the back, and give them a better chance to win matches as a result.
Vancouver FC: Attacking depth
The Eagles are a little bit tricky to assess because they have made a lot of signings recently, and it isn't yet clear how those players will fit into their squad.
Hugo Mbongue fills a hole up top with the departure of Alejandro Díaz, but the club needs more from its strikers in general.
In midfield, meanwhile, it remains to be seen what they have in 19-year-old holding midfielder Michel Cavalcante, as well as 19-year-old midfielder Abdoulaye Ouattara. That could solve a position of need for this team, but they could look to bring another veteran midfielder into the mix as well.
One area where the team could definitely still use some additions, however, is in attack. The team has lost a number of dynamic attacking options from last season, like Gabriel Bitar, Ayman Sellouf and Mikaël Cantave. Having another player like that to balance out what Thierno Bah has been able to do on the left this season would be a nice add for this team.
York United: Central defensive depth
On the attacking side of the ball, there has never been a York United team with this much quality. But the reason that York are not higher in the table comes down to their defending.
It has been better of late, certainly, a big reason why they are undefeated in their past five matches. But especially seeing as they have deployed a back three, and one with captain Elijah Adekugbe dropping back, they could use more depth and quality at the position.
Crucially, a defender who can help the team see out pressure situations late in matches and avoid the possibility of more dropped points from winning positions could be a game-changing addition for this York team.
